Need A Quick Fix for Feeling Overwhelmed?

Have you ever had one of those days when it seems like you can’t stand to have one more thing thrown at you? Not one more request to do something … not one more request for help … not one more problem added to your plate … not one more obligation for the same day … etc.

While it sounds like the very last thing you have time to do, just STOP everything. Get yourself to a quiet place even if the only one around is a bathroom stall. Give yourself just five minutes to sit in the quiet. Set your phone timer so you don’t stress over the time. Close your eyes and breathe … I mean some of those deep from the gut breaths.

After a couple of minutes, intentionally envision something or someone that makes you happy, and let this thought force you to smile. Keep that thought and smile until the timer goes off.

Now get up and go back to whatever it was that you were doing, feeling less stressed and with the intention of getting one thing done at a time. You will be amazed how just intentionally STOPPING to calm your mind for five minutes can change your entire mindset.

  1. Love this idea with the overwhelming feeling that January can sometimes bring with all the many resolutions, changes in habits, and setting new goals. Time to just take a break even for 5 minutes to help me not feel so overwhelmed and know that breaks and breathing are just as important as everything else.
Thanks so much for the reminder to do this!

    1. Thanks for your comment Sarah. You are right … January is a perfect month for testing this technique. Hope it works for you!
